THE
FIRST LIGHT WORSHIP HOUR
9:45 a.m.

|
“The
attendance at the 9:45 am contemporary service has increased
tenfold since its inception. Our new Christian Life Center will
ignite an explosion of growth for this service. The worship
atmosphere includes multimedia resources, drama and musical
presentations. This worship service is already alive, but with the
new facility and its resources, you’ll walk in and say, ‘Wow!’”
Senior Pastor Dr. Jay Horton

First United Methodist has
long been a leader in offering the best traditional worship
services in the country. With the opening of its new Christian
Life Center (CLC), First Church joins a growing number of churches
offering a weekly contemporary worship service. Beginning at 9:45
am, this service is called The First Light Worship Hour. It meets
in the Great Hall of the new building. This new space features two
large video screens and stage with the latest in video, sound and
computer technology.
Since music is one of the
most important dimensions of the First Light Service, it offers a
mixture of contemporary Christian music, old time gospel and
hymns. The music leaders are Junior and Mickie Vasquez; they are
backed by the First Light Band, a group of some of the finest
professional musicians in this area. Senior Pastor Dr. Jay Horton
preaches at this service and sometimes joins the band playing his
guitar.

“Any growing church has to offer multiple
opportunities for people to worship and serve the Lord,” says Dr. Jay
Horton. “That’s what our church has done with the First Light Service,
growing it from about 10 to well over almost 200 in just two years.”
“Vasquez has put together one of the best
bands I have ever heard,” says Dr. Horton. “I’m talking about
professional, studio quality musicians. On top of this, they are
all Christians who believe in the mission of First Methodist.”
The band plays all types of music: rock,
country, traditional hymns, classical and musical presentations.
Vasquez always reminds band members that they are not there to
entertain but to worship God through music and His Word. Because
of this attitude, Sunday mornings are a great worship service.
Each service concludes with the sacrament of Holy Communion, which
in the Methodist Church anyone can participate. Since this service
is less formal and dress is casual, many families attend.
“Jesus said ‘You are the light of the world’
(Matthew 5:14). We want our worshippers at this service to experience the light of Christ through
music and praise,” says Dr. Horton.
