In December of 2013, First Methodist Lubbock began a new partnership with Bayless Elementary in Lubbock to provide resources, mentors, and prayers to some of the most disadvantaged kids in the Lubbock Independent School District.

There are many avenues available for volunteering at Bayless at 58th and Avenue U. Below, you will find many on-going outreach projects, as well as, one time events. Both are a great way to put your faith into action!

Feeding Bayless Summer -                                            Callie Bruening ready to serve!

Summer is awesome, unless you are hungry. Many children only have consistent meals during school. Bayless is one of seven schools open all summer to feed children, 18 years and younger, breakfast and lunch on Monday through Thursday. FUMC is assisting Bayless and the Texas Hunger Initiative to publicize the availability of meals. We are also distributing South Plains Food Bank food vouchers during lunch every Wednesday this summer.

Classroom Reading Bags

Once a semester, books will be purchased and/or donated based on leveled reading and any specific requests by teachers. The books are checked out by students on Fridays and returned Monday. The hope is to encourage children to read and learn to enjoy the freedom and new skills learned from reading.

A mentor strives to be the student’s friend, role model, motivator and personal advocate. Time is the only expected item to be shared with the child. Mentors act as cheerleaders and coaches.

Duties/Responsibilities: Times and number of days are flexible. Please contact Kim Blankenship at Bayless for more information.
