FUMC Chancel Choir
The FUMC Chancel Choir is
an ensemble of around 90 members, singing the best
sacred music in the American Protestant and English
choral traditions. The choir sings weekly at the
10.50am worship service, and at other special services,
such as the 9.00pm Candlelight Carol Service on
Christmas Eve, and the Service of Tenebrae on Good
Friday.
The choir also regularly
presents major choral works as part of the FUMC Vesper
Concert Series, and sings with the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra. Recent works have included Mozart's
Mass in C minor, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Rutter's
Feel the Spirit, and Nicholas White's Magnificat, which
was written for the Chancel Choir.
The Chancel Choir has
undertaken numerous foreign tours, most recently to
Paris, France in June 2010. This tour included
performances at the church of the Madeleine, the
American Cathedral, and Notre Dame Cathedral. In
recent years the choir has sung at St. Peter's, Rome,
St. Mark's, Venice, and major churches and cathedrals in
England, Scotland, and Norway.
Some members of the choir
are professional musicians, and many come from other
backgrounds - teachers, doctors, lawyers, students,
professors, etc. We always welcome new members.
Membership of the Chancel
Choir follows a simple audition. Choral or
instrumental experience, and some music reading ability
is essential. To arrange an interview, contact the
Chancel Choir director, Christopher Betts
