RSCM America 'Voice for
Life' Program
At FUMC, members of our
Wesley Boys and Wesley Girls choirs receive musical and
spiritual instruction in line with the RSCM America
'Voice for Life' program. RSCM America grew out of
a British organization, the Royal School of Church
Music. It promotes a framework in which young
church choir members can fully develop their musical,
social and spiritual skills, giving them tools to use
throughout their lives: the 'Voice for Life' program.
'Voice for Life' takes
choir members (choristers) through various levels,
beginning with Light Blue. At the Light Blue
level, the choristers are taught about the following
things:
'VOICE FOR LIFE' LIGHT BLUE
LEVEL
Good singing posture
Creating a good singing
tone in simple vowel sounds
The names of pitches on the
musical stave
Simple note lengths (1/8
note, 1/4 note, 1/2 note, whole note)
Sharps and Flats
Scales of C, F and G
Simple Time Signatures
Dynamic Markings
Recognizing Major / Minor
chords
Recognizing Higher / Lower
pitches
Singing back a melody
Clapping back a rhythm
Singing a scale
Clap a melody from sight (5
notes, simple note lengths)
Sing a melody from sight (5
notes, stepwise)
Recite the Chorister's
Prayer
Recite the Lord's Prayer
Major Church seasons
The Hymnal
Recite several given bible
verses
These skills are taught
during choir rehearsals, and at other times in small
groups (convenient for choristers, parents and choir
directors)
Subsequent levels (Dark
Blue, Red, Yellow) lead the chorister to grow to where
he/she can read music fluently, sing with good posture
and technique, fully understand his/her role as a singer
in church and community, and appreciate how the
Christian faith is valuable in all areas of our lives.
