'Joseph' - the play

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was first written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice as a 'pop cantata' for Colet Court School in London, England, and was first performed in 1968.  It was such a success that later in the same year it was performed at Westminster Central Hall, where it was seen by the UK Sunday Times Jazz and Pop critic, who loved it.  This led to the publication of the original twenty minute school performance version, and to the beginning of Lloyd Webber's incredible career as a composer of musical theater, including Evita, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Starlight Express and Phantom of the Opera.   Joseph evolved during the next few years and emerged as a fully staged production similar to its present form in Leicester, England, in 1973.  By 1982 it was playing on Broadway.  In 1991 Lloyd Webber revised the musical again, incorporating his knowledge and experience from his other popular musicals, as well as including a children's chorus as an integral part of the show.  This production of Joseph was instantly a huge success, and is the version licensed to FUMC for our production.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat takes place "way, way back many centuries ago, not long after the bible began" in the lands of Canaan and Egypt.  The music is written in many styles (50s rock and roll, 70s Pop, Country/Western, Classical and more..), all a lot of fun, and the plot remains true and respectful to the bible story of Joseph and his brothers.

Musical highlights include:
Any Dream Will Do
