First Wednesday of Advent

Have you ever listened to the Gaither Vocal Band or any of the other Southern Gospel groups?  Frankly, that genre of music isn't my first choice but it doesn't take long to become aware of a re-occurring theme:  "when we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be."  Many, perhaps most of the songs deal with the idea that our life here and now is not our final destination.  For believers, heaven is our home throughout eternity and the difficulties and heartaches of this world only serve to prepare us for the perfection that only exists in the world to come.
Rohr says as much when he speaks of the Kingdom of God as "the Big Picture."  By asking the questions, "In light of eternity, does this really matter?” he helps us put into perspective the messiness of this life when compared to the next.  However, because the Kingdom is also eternal, it is present here and now and is a reality just as it will be there and then.  This is the hope and assurance we live in.  This hope reminds us that we can enjoy God’s reign in our lives today!  Praise be to God.
